Vesper & Onion

Title: Vesper & Onion: A Forager’s Story
Publisher: Greentea Publishing
Author: Vera Greentea
Artist: Sarah Webb
Designer: Paul Fallaha

Vesper is an apprentice witch. Every morning, messages from elder witches await her with instructions for retrieving rare and unusual spell ingredients — usually from the Sacred Wood of the Lady Ines. Today is no different, and Vesper sets out with her feline familiar Onion to find cherchik mushrooms. But upon reaching the Sacred Wood, Vesper unexpectedly finds pools of portalwater. When they are waylaid and surrounded by the sentient mushroom guardians of the woods, Vesper has no choice but to strike a deal … one that may come back to haunt her ….

I love backing kickstarter campaigns, particularly for niche witchy publications that might not otherwise see print.

And I’m so glad that I backed Vesper & Onion. This is an adorable comic. I love Vesper with her thick glasses, her practical boots, and her comfy sunlit kitchen. Onion is curious and loyal and impulsive. And the world they inhabit is strange and wonderful and not without its dangers, but also beautiful and filled with friendly people.

And not so friendly people, as you’ll find out when you get to the end.

I really hope that there is a kickstarter soon for the second issue. I can’t wait to read Vesper and Onion’s further adventures, in and out of the Sacred Wood.

Highly recommended to fans of The Dragon Tea Society series of graphic novels, Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson, I Am a Witch’s Cat by Harriet Muncaster, and the Hilda series by Luke Pearson.
