When I was in art school, I was once told by a young (male) professor that my desire to create beautiful works that brought joy into people's lives was shallow-- and therefore a complete waste of my art education. While it's important to face ugliness and brutality with honesty in order to resist, combat and transform it, what he was missing is that tangible beauty in our surroundings and the beauty created in art can inspire hope and make us contemplate what is largely missing from our everyday lives in this battered world. In the case of a tranquil nature image, it can show us what is worth reclaiming, protecting and preserving. It can also make us aspire to something better, rather than accepting what *is* as the only way the world can be.

It's also been proven in clinical studies, in a practical way, that beauty helps heal-- a pleasant view out the window of a hospital room, a garden to walk in, and beautiful live music all speed up the recovery process in health care.

Thank you for this essay.
